Charlotte Adelman, one of the leaders of our upcoming (sold-out!) tour of native plant gardens in Wilmette, Illinois, is an expert on native plants. So which books on native plants has she found useful? She was kind enough to share her favorites with us.

Whether you are taking the tour or not, check out the following books to learn about native plants' many environmental benefits and gain insights into how to incorporate them into your own garden:
  • Birdscaping in the Midwest: A Guide to Gardening with Native Plants to Attract Birds - Paperback – September 4, 2012 by Mariette Nowak (Author), Peter H. Raven.
  • Bringing Nature Home: How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants, Updated and Expanded Paperback – April 1, 2009 by Douglas W. Tallamy (Author), Rick Darke.
  • The Living Landscape: Designing for Beauty and Biodiversity in the Home Garden  - Hardcover – July 1, 2014 by Rick Darke (Author), Douglas W. Tallamy (Author).

Charlotte herself is the author of The Midwestern Native Garden: Native Alternatives to Nonnative Flowers and Plants and the forthcoming Midwestern Native Shrubs & Trees: Gardening Alternatives to Nonnative Species. We are lucky and pleased to be able to share her expertise with our members and others who care about the Lake Michigan ecosystem!

Slide 4 of the Presentation
If you did not attend the well-received program on Water and Climate Change on June 18 in Washington DC, you are in luck!

The speaker, The Nature Conservancy's Global Policy Director, Lynn Scarlett, generously has shared her slide presentation with us. The slides and a video of the program are now available on the LWV Lake Michigan Region homepage.

The entire video is about 55 minutes long. If you are pressed for time, make sure to see Scarlett's presentation. It starts at 1:25 and runs until about 30:46.

LWVLMR sponsored this presentation along with 9 other county, state, and regional Leagues and the LWVUS Climate Change Task Force.

LWVLMR in DC to advocate for the Great Lakes

2/26/2015

LWVLMR President Henrietta Saunders, Laurie Morse of LWV Glencoe, IL, Jill Ryan of Freshwater Future, and Jeanette Neagu and Deborah Chubb, both LWV La Porte County, IN, in Washington DC to give voice to the importance of the lakes to voters in the Great Lakes states.
Today, League members join other advocates on Capitol Hill to share the need for continued restoration of the Great Lakes. They will be discussing clean water protection, runoff pollution, and invasive species, and funding of programs like the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the Regional Conservation Partnership Program, and the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, all of which are critical to the health of the lakes.

LWVLMR is a member of the Healing Our Waters - Great Lakes Coalition, which organizes Great Lakes Day every year.

On 16 September, the Clean Bay Backers welcomed over one hundred NE Wisconsin legislators, local officials and community leaders to learn about Green Bay's "dead zone," the PCB cleanup, the Cat Island Chain Restoration and riverfront revitalization. Nearly a dozen local experts guided the tour aboard the Foxy Lady regarding efforts to reduce runoff pollution, clean up toxins, enhance fish and wildlife habitat, and improve economic benefits of the Fox River and Green Bay.

The Clean Bay Backers is the Citizen Advisory Committee to the WI Department of Natural Resources for the Lower Green Bay and Fox River Area of Concern. Members included Patricia Finder-Stone, Dotty Juengst and Kathy LeFavre from LWV-GGB. We are proud that  Finder-Stone also represented the League of Women Voters Lake Michigan Region.
